Treatment of Canine Blood in the Urine

Blood in a dog’s urine signals the sign of an underlying illness.  Frequent urination is another indicator of a problem.  A dog with these problems should be examined by a veterinarian for a thorough physical examination and urinalysis.

The pet owner will need to take some steps to assist in the recovery process.  Mild cases of blood in the urine may necessitate a short course of antibiotics.  If the examination leads to kidney stones, surgical removal will be necessary if treatment isn’t effective.  Tumors will also need to be surgically removed.  Dogs suffering from blood in the urine need to have access to plenty of clean, fresh water at all times.  Prescription diets made especially for dogs with urinary problems may be a recommendation.

If the blood is a result of kidney failure IV fluids may be administered as a supportive measure.  In the most severe cases, dialysis may be a recommendation.  Antibiotics are usually prescribed to treat any infection.

Some dogs are at a higher risk for developing kidney stones than others.  Breeds including miniature schnauzers and Dalmatians are included in the list of dogs that are more predisposed to cases of urinary disorders.
