Symptoms of Canine Diabetes |
Two of the most commonly observed signs of canine diabetes are increased consumption of water and increased urination. These symptoms are generally the first observed by pet owners. Weight loss is another sign indicative of diabetes. Dogs with diabetes may lose weight, even though they are showing signs of an increased appetite. As the disease progresses, if left untreated, other more severe symptoms, some of which can be life-threatening can arise. Cataracts and sudden blindness are two frequently noticed signs of untreated diabetes. If diabetes is allowed to progress, blood chemistry changes can take place causing ketoacidosis. When the disease reaches this point, it becomes life-threatening causing symptoms to become much more severe. Clinical signs will take the form of vomiting, lethargy, and ensuing weakness. Ultimately, the dog will go into a coma and death will soon follow. Pet owners who notice their dog is showing any of the warning signs of canine diabetes should seek immediate medical attention through their veterinarian. It is imperative to catch this disease in the early stages for the best prognosis. Through medical treatment, most of the clinical signs of diabetes can be lessened if it is properly diagnosed and treated |
