Overview of Canine Injuries & Poisoning

Understanding the potential risk of injuries and poisoning is essential for the well-being of the family pet.  Every year many dogs are injured or poisoned by common household items, cleansers, plants, food items, and chemicals.  Death is the end result in many of these harmful incidents.

Although gardens can be peaceful havens for humans, many safety hazards can be found lurking within their perimeters.  Although some plants are poisonous, they are not the only dangerous elements.  Products used to eradicate the insect population, flower enhancers, and fertilizers can provide temptation to a curious canine.   

Pet owners who suspect their dog has ingested something that could be potentially poisonous should seek immediate veterinary advice.  It is essential to have some information at hand when making the call including: 

  • What was ingested?
  • How much was ingested?
  • Time ingested
  • Current weight of the dog
  • Any medications the dog is taking
  • Medical history

New pet owners should take preventative measures to pet proof their home before bringing a new puppy into their household.
