Treatment of Canine Pyometra |
There are two types of pyometra; open and closed. In cases of open pyometra, the cervix is open and pus drains from the vagina. The drainage is brown or pink and has an offensive odor. When closed pyometra occurs, the uterus is closed and pus is unable to drain from the vagina. In this case, pus collects in the uterus. Pyometra occurs when bacteria and toxins from an infected uterus leak into the bloodstream. It is life-threatening and can cause damage to other organs. All cases of this disease require emergency medical treatment. Without medical treatment canine pyometra is fatal. In most instances, treatment of pyometra begins with the surgical removal of the ovaries and uterus, essentially spaying the dog. This procedure requires a few days of hospitalization to aid in the recovery process. Pre-surgical antibiotics are given and may need to be continued by the pet owner following surgery. This surgery is extremely challenging and may result in the death of the dog. Canine pyometra can be prevented if dogs are spayed at a young age, although dogs can be spayed at any age. The benefits of spaying female dogs far outweigh the surgical risks involved in a pyometra surgery. |
