Causes of Feline Strokes |
Feline strokes occur when there is a reduction in the blood supply to the brain. Various disorders can lead to this condition, the most common occurrences come about due to accidental circumstances or poisoning. In very rare instances, intestinal parasites can trigger a stroke. Underlying medical conditions can sometimes lead to feline strokes. The most common medical conditions contributing to feline strokes include kidney disease, thyroid disease, brain tumors, and heart disease; as well as, Cushing’s disease, Feline strokes are recognized in two ways; Ischemic strokes and Hemorrhagic strokes. Ischemic strokes occur when the blood supply to the brain is reduced and the brain is starved for oxygen. Hemorrhagic strokes occur due to a broken blood vessel, which invariably causes bleeding in the brain. Warning factors, most commonly linked with feline strokes, include changes in behavior, loss of balance, lethargy, confusion, uncontrollable circling, sudden loss of vision, and head tilting. A cat that is exhibiting signs of having suffered a stroke should be examined by a veterinarian immediately. An examination, with the inclusion of a blood workup and extensive testing is part of the diagnostic process. Only when all test results are weighed, will a stroke diagnosis be given to the pet’s owner. Stroke symptoms can mimic the signs of many other illnesses, therefore intensive testing is needed to rule other conditions. |
