Causes of Feline Upper Respiratory Infections

Feline upper respiratory infections can range from a cat showing signs of sneezing for a few days to a more severe infection that can last for several weeks.  These infections are referred to as you URIs.  Feline upper respiratory infections are usually caused by one of two infections; feline calicivirus or rhinotracheitis virus.

Feline upper respiratory infections can be fatal, especially in young cats that have not yet been vaccinated and geriatric cats.  Symptoms can also include depression, shortness of breath, and ulcers.  Many infected cats quit eating and drinking; making it necessary for fluid injections to prevent dehydration.  If necessary, the veterinarian can feed the cat, through its stomach with a feeding tube.  Antibiotics can be prescribed to treat the disease.

Many cats can carry upper respiratory infections.  Even though they may only experience a mild recurrence, they can spread the disease to other felines.

Vaccines are available for the prevention of upper respiratory diseases; including feline rhinotracheitis, feline calicivirus, and feline chlamydiosis.  Pet owners should supply their cats with good health care by taking measures to provide well-balanced nutritional meals, vitamins, and yearly examinations with recommended vaccines.  A veterinarian can offer additional feline good health tips.
