Prevention is the best method of assuring situations of injury or poisoning does not occur. Many commonly used household items are toxic to canine family members, often causing serious illness or death. Substances such as antifreeze, chocolate, cleaning products, garbage, insecticides, laundry products, and medications (both human and animal) have toxic properties. All poisonous materials should be kept out of reach or in a locked area. If a dog is the victim of an accidental injury or ingests something believed to be toxic, it warrants immediate veterinary attention. Remaining contents of the product or, if possible a list of the ingredients should be taken to the hospital with the dog. |
