Core Feline Vaccinations

The most commonly recommended feline vaccinations include feline distemper and rabies.  These vaccines are known as core feline vaccinations and are considered essential for any cat.  Feline core vaccinations include feline panleukopenia vaccination, feline rhinotracheitis vaccination, feline calicivirus vaccination, and the feline rabies vaccination.

Rabies is a disease that not only affects animals, but also humans.  When an animal or a person is bitten by an animal infected with rabies; it is fatal.   Because this disease is so deadly, most areas require rabies vaccinations to be current.  Cats are given rabies vaccines as kittens, with the vaccine to be continued throughout the life of the cat.

The expiration time of the rabies vaccine is dependent upon state laws governing rabies guidelines.  In most communities, the rabies vaccine needs to be given at increments of every year, every other year, or every three years.  A rabies tag and corresponding certificate will be issued at the time of the rabies injection.   This data can be used as verification that the vaccine is current.

The feline distemper vaccine, feline rhinotracheitis vaccine, feline panleukopenia vaccine, and feline chlamydia vaccine are given as a combination vaccination.  These diseases are easily transmitted and can become quite serious, often leading to fatalities.  A series of feline distemper vaccines are given to puppies.   Each injection is usually part of a series, which is given every 3 to 4 weeks.   Upon completion of the series, a booster will be given one year laterThis procedure needs to be continued throughout the life of the cat.  The veterinarian will determine if the vaccine is to be given with an efficacy of one to three years.
