Diagnosis of Feline Acne

Feline acne is a disorder that affects cats of all ages and breeds.  Both males and females share the same risk factor of developing feline acne.  Although the exact cause is unknown, there some contributing factors seemingly associated with the disease.  Some cases appear to be stress related, while others result from poor grooming habits.  Feline acne can also occur as an underlying symptom of another more serious condition.

Diagnosis begins with a physical examination of the infected cat, including an evaluation of the cat’s present as well as past medical history.    The veterinarian may take a skin scrape at this time. Feline acne can also be diagnosed with a skin biopsy.  This will help to rule out other conditions with similar clinical symptoms.

A culture and sensitivity can be conducted in a veterinarian’s office if the practitioner suspects a secondary bacterial infection is at fault.

Early diagnosis and treatment provide the best measure of giving a cat relief of the symptoms of feline acne.  Most cases of feline acne are very treatable. They generally range from mild to moderate, and require little treatment.  If left untreated, secondary bacterial infections can develop, leading to far more serious consequences.
