Diagnosis of Feline Arthritis

Feline arthritis is a degenerative joint disease that is not curable.  It commonly occurs in geriatric felines, causing immense pain and discomfort.  Since this condition commonly affects senior cats, the symptoms are often misinterpreted as just being signs of aging.

Diagnosing feline arthritis begins with a comprehensive examination of the afflicted cat.  Blood tests and x-rays will be used as diagnostic tools to rule out any other diseases with symptoms similar to those seen in arthritis.  X-rays are useful in identifying inflamed joints and assessing the condition of the cartilage between the bones.

Many drugs are available to reduce joint inflammation and control the resulting pain.  Glucosamine and Chondroitin are very effective in reducing the joint inflammation.  Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) can be given to cats to stop the pain and discomfort of arthritis.  Results obtained from a blood workup can aid the veterinarian in choosing an appropriate pain medication.  Proper nutrition can also help lessen the discomfort associated with arthritis and increase the cat’s mobility.

An early diagnosis and an appropriate course of action can give an arthritic cat much needed pain relief and a more active and healthy life for many years to come.
