Diagnosis of Feline Conjunctivitis

Feline conjunctivitis is often called feline pink eye and can be a chronic problem for many cats.  Diagnosing conjunctivitis can be very difficult.  In some cases, a laboratory study may be needed for an accurate diagnosis.  A cellular smear or a scraping from the conjunctiva may need to be analyzed.  Other measures can be taken to determine the cause and select an effective treatment plan, including biopsies, bacterial cultures, and viral cultures.

Initially, the diagnosis will begin with a physical examination and study of the cat’s previous medical history.  After the possibility of other causes, such as injury or damage resulting from a foreign object, other diagnostic measures can be taken.  Information obtained from blood testing gives an indication of the existence of an infection that could be the cause of the condition.  Many of the tests that are performed will be used to diagnose any underlying causes for the condition.  Diagnostic findings help the veterinarian choose an appropriate method of treatment.
