Diagnosis and Treatment of Canine Diarrhea |
Canine diarrhea is a common ailment shared by many dogs. There is a wide variance of treatment measures, but they all have a shared goal. “Put an end to the diarrhea.” A bland diet can be used to effectively control cases of mild diarrhea in dogs and puppies. Improvement should be seen within one or two days. If there is little or no improvement, an appointment should be made with a veterinarian. A microscopic examination of a fecal smear can be conducted to check for the presence of parasites. A dewormer can be given to rid the dog of any parasitic infestations. Less severe cases of diarrhea may be treated with an anti-diarrheal such as Pepto Bismol, Amodium-D, or Kaopectate. Products of this nature should only be used when a dog shows no signs, other than a minor case of diarrhea. If the problem does not clear up within a couple days, the dog needs to be seen by a veterinarian for a diagnostic examination. Veterinary care is a must in cases of severe diarrhea. Chronic diarrhea can lead to lethargy, inappetance, disinterest in drinking water, weight loss, and discomfort. Therapeutic measures such as blood testing and other diagnostic tests can be performed to identify and treat the problem. |
