Prevention of Feline Ear Diseases

Pet owners can take preventative steps to protect their cats from ear infections with the use of ear cleaning solutions.  Accumulated debris and dirt can be cleaned with a soft cloth dipped in a cleaning solution.  Cleaning on a regular basis will help keep the cat’s ears healthy.

Warm olive oil or almond oil can also be used as an ear cleaner.  Place a few drops of olive oil in the opening of the ear canal.  Then gently massage the warm liquid to work it into the ear.  A clean cotton cloth or cotton balls can be used to wipe loose dirt and oil from the ear.  Repeat the process in the other ear.

Feline ears should be protected from sunburn, especially those with light colored ears.  During hot summer days, a non-toxic sun cream can be applied to the ears.  This area is prone to skin cancer and often leads to amputation of the ears.

Several over-the-counter products which contain natural ingredients can be purchased for use in feline ears.  These products will help in dissolving ear wax and removing debris.  Many contain tea tree oil, which acts as a natural disinfectant.  Always consult with a veterinarian to discuss safety issues before using any of these products in a cat’s ears.
