Treatment of Feline Ear Diseases |
The type of infection, as well as, the underlying cause will determine the treatment to be used in healing a feline ear disorder. Foreign objects sometimes cause infections and need to be surgically removed. In the case of an allergy triggered infection, prescription drugs need to be administered to clear up an ear infection and treat the allergy. The initial step in treating an ear infection requires flushing or cleansing a cat’s ears. In some cases, the infection may need to be treated while the cat is sedated. Anti-fungal medications or anti-parasitic drugs can then be used to eliminate some ear problems. Herbal remedies can reduce or even eliminate irritating ear infection symptoms and in some cases even be beneficial. Herbal products consist exclusively of natural ingredients that have healing properties. Goldenseal and tea tree oil, which have antibiotic and fungal properties are included in some herbal products. They have been proven to promote healing. Other herbs such as myrrh and chamomile have properties that can reduce inflammation while easing the pain and irritation of an ear infection. Before using any natural remedies or herbal substances, consult with a conventional veterinary practitioner for proper usage and safety information. |
