Treatment of Feline External Parasites

Feline external parasites live on the outside of a cat’s body and include fleas, ticks, lice, ear mites, and mange mites among others.  These parasites carry numerous diseases, including Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tapeworms, and heartworms.  Many of these diseases can be fatal for a cat.

External parasites can cause cats to experience various distressful symptoms.  Cats suffering from a parasite infestation often suffer the anguish of hot spots, itching, hair loss, and general skin irritation.  Treatment of feline external parasites can be facilitated through several methods.  Monthly flea and tick products provide ample parasite control.  Shampoos and sprays are readily available for the control and eradication of parasites.

Control of parasite infestations requires treating the environment, as well as, all of the cats in the household.  Environmental protection can be accomplished through treatment of the cat’s immediate surroundings.  Steps should be taken to rid bedding, carpets, and upholstery of fleas and provide a flea free household.  Many stores carry several products to keep the parasites in areas outside the home under control.

The labeling on all over-the-counter parasite control products should be checked very carefully to make sure they are safe to use on or around cats.  To avoid toxicity issues, use only one product at a time.  After using parasite control products, a cat should be monitored for several hours.
