Diagnosis of Feline Eye Diseases

The veterinarian will take a regimen of steps when diagnosing feline eye diseases.  Diagnosis begins with a complete examination of the infected eye or eyes.  A diagnostic tool, known as an ophthalmoscope is used to examine the interior of the eye.

Testing is the next step in the process.  A polymerase chain reaction test can be performed to analyze a sample of the discharge for viruses.  An immunoflourescent antibody test may be conducted in an effort to obtain as much diagnostic information as possible.

If the veterinarian suspects the infection is a result of feline keratitis, a sample of the discharge will be sent for laboratory testing.  A Schirmer tear test is a simple test that can be performed while the cat is awake.  A tear strip is placed on the lower eyelid to initiate tear production.  A corneal scraping will be taken to check for ulcers or abrasions.  An orange stain will be used to perform this test.  Corneal changes, size of ulcers, and eye trauma can be detected with the use of the test.

A cat suspected of having glaucoma can be tested with a tonometer to determine eye pressure.

Each test will also be used to rule out other eye diseases, so the appropriate treatment can be performed.
