Medication for the Treatment of Feline Ear Mites |
Several medications used in the treatment of feline ear mites are available over- the-counter and can also be purchased in a veterinarian’s office. Prescription medications tend to be much stronger, therefore offer much more effectiveness. The most effective feline ear mite medications contain pyrethrins. Ear mite treatment should begin with cleansing the infected cat’s ears, after which medication can be applied. Initially, the pet owner will need to treat their cat’s ears on a weekly basis. This weekly cleaning procedure may need to be done for three to four weeks to rid the cat of ear mites. Various medications have been shown to have exceptionally good results in treating feline ear mites. Acarexx, Fipronil, Milbemycin, and Selamectin have been proven to be the most effective medications used to eradicate feline ear mites. In general, ear mites are found in the ears, although they can live anywhere on the body, especially in the neck, back, feet, and tail area. These areas, as well as, the ears should be treated in order to completely rid a cat of an infestation. An assortment of shampoos, sprays, and dips are available for treating feline ear mites. Pet owners should take precautionary measures to read labels carefully and use only products labeled strictly for use on cats. |
