Feline Eye Diseases

A large scope of eye diseases frequently occurs within the feline population.  Some of the afflictions are seen with regularity, while others are very uncommon.  Various factors cause the diseases, with the inclusion of allergies, bacterial infections, injuries, and viral infections.

Environmental irritants encountered by felines also play a role in causing eye diseases.  Feline eyes are very sensitive; therefore irreversible damage as a result of disease can occur in a very short time with devastating results.

Conjunctivitis, an inflammation of the conjunctiva is the most frequently diagnosed feline eye disease.  It causes the eye to appear red and swollen, in addition to emitting a pus-like excretion.  Conjunctivitis infections can range in severity from mild to acute

Glaucoma, another commonly seen feline eye affliction causes an abnormal increase in eye pressure.    The infected eyeball can become enlarged if the glaucoma is not treated, but allowed to reach a dangerous level.  If left untreated, glaucoma can result in a permanent loss of vision.

Treatment of feline eye diseases can be conducted through the use of topical medication therapy and surgical measures.  Some diseases respond quickly to treatment, while others require more extensive long-term treatment.
