Nuheart General Information

Nuheart (ivermectin) is a generic form of the well-known monthly heartworm preventative; Heartgard. It contains ivermectin, the same active ingredient found in the higher priced product. Nuheart tablets are meat flavored and offer the same amount of ivermectin as Heartgard. The main difference between Heartgard and Nuheart lies in the fact that Nuheart can be purchased over-the-counter. No prescription is necessary. Most dogs will come to look at the tablet as a flavorful meaty treat. Nuheart is a soluble pill that can be mixed in a small quantity of water and poured over a dog’s food.

Nuheart can be given to puppies six weeks of age or older. It should not be given to puppies under six weeks of age. Nuheart is safe for all dog breeds, pregnant dogs, and nursing dogs; as long as the correct dosage is given. Nuheart should not be given to cats.

Your veterinarian should conduct a heartworm test prior to giving your dog monthly doses of Nuheart. It can be given in place of other more expensive monthly heartworm preventatives. It takes six months for microfilaria to mature and become adult heartworms; therefore a heartworm test will be needed if your dog has missed six months or more of taking a heartworm preventative.
