Canine Diarrhea and Pepto Bismol |
Bouts of canine diarrhea can often be treated with a bland diet of cooked white rice mixed with the lean hamburger or boiled chicken. The diet should be offered in small quantities throughout the day. Plenty of clean fresh water should be made available at all times. This diet should be continued for a few days, after which a gradual return can be made to the dog's regular diet. The most serious side effect linked to diarrhea is dehydration. Therefore, providing plenty of fresh water will avoid this type of complication. Over-the-counter medications, such as Pepto-Bismol may be used to firm a dog’s stole and ease stomach distress. Pepto-Bismol should only be used in minor cases of canine diarrhea. Although side effects are rare, they can take place. Side effects often take the form of a darkened tongue or darkening of the stool. The best rule of thumb is to consult with a veterinarian before using any over-the-counter human medications to treat canine diarrhea. Pepto Bismol can be purchased in chewable tablet form or as an oral suspension and is readily available at the pharmacy. The quantity of Pepto Bismol to be given varies according to the weight of the dog. Contact your veterinarian to determine the safe usage and proper dosage for your pet before using this product. |
