Prevention of Canine Obesity

Today, canine obesity is one of the fastest growing health problems in the canine population.  Canine obesity is very dangerous and can lead to various other diseases and health issues.  Pet owners can take measures to prevent canine obesity by initiating measures to avoid allowing their dog to gain excess weight.  Pet owners should begin monitoring their dog’s weight when they are still very young.

All dogs should be fed a good quality diet twice a day.  Dogs should be fed twice a day, with the first feeding during the early morning hours.  This way he can burn off the calories from the morning meal before eating the evening meal.  Meals should never be fed late at night.  Commercially manufactured treats are ok, although other healthier alternatives such as fruits and vegetables are much better to use as snacks.

An exercise routine is a fundamental part of canine weight management.  A regimen of moderate daily exercise is needed to burn calories.

Measures of weight control should be initiated when a dog is very young and continued throughout their life.  Weight should be monitored and recorded on a regular basis.  Many veterinary offices offer complimentary weight checks to their regular clients.
