Symptoms of Feline Infectious Anemia

Feline infectious anemia, Hemobartonellosis is a disease of the blood which can range in severity from mild, to cases so severe they can result in death.  Confirmation of the presence of parasites in blood samples and the number of red blood cells in the bone marrow validate a diagnosis of feline infectious anemia.

The signs of feline infectious anemia are usually dependant upon the severity of the disease and the underlying cause.  Clinical symptoms of the disease cover a wide range and depending upon the severity of the condition, an infected cat may experience different degrees of severity.  Some of the most frequently exhibited symptoms include:

  • Depression
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Anemia
  • Enlarged Liver
  • Enlarged Spleen
  • Jaundice
  • Lethargy
  • Respiratory Problems
  • Weakness

 

Feline infectious anemia is a condition which causes a cat to suffer from a reduced number of red blood cells.  Although, this is a very serious disease it can be treated with antibiotics and supportive care.  Cats that are not treated usually die within hours of the manifestation of warning signs.
