Symptoms of Canine Epilepsy

Even though other diseases result in instances of seizures, canine epilepsy is characterized by seizures.  Depending upon the severity of the disease and the individual dog, seizures may range from mild to extreme.   Many signs indicative of canine epilepsy vary from one dog to another.  Some dogs become dazed and simply stare into space, while others experience a full blown seizure.

Most seizures fall into one of two categories; grand mal seizures or petit mal seizures.  Seizures in each category are characterized by different signs and symptoms.

The recovery period after a seizure can be last for just a few hours, or it can last for several days.  During the recovery period, a dog may still show signs of being unhappy; acting disoriented or depressed,

Some dogs will chew on themselves or chase their tail, while others give the impression of chewing on something.

If you notice your pet exhibiting any of the symptoms of epilepsy, or exhibiting anything that resembles a seizure; it is time to seek medical assistance.  After a complete examination and blood work, steps can be taken to find the underlying cause and a treatment plan can be put into action
