Causes and Symptoms of Feline Acne

Feline acne is a skin disorder that results when a cat is unable to clean their chin.  Dirt accumulates on a cat’s chin and mixes with skin secretions causing the hair follicles to become plugged.  The hair follicles become blocked with a black sebaceous material.  This condition is known as acne.  Blackheads may become infected as they develop around a cat’s lips and chin.

Cases of feline acne can range in severity from mild to extremely severe with frequent recurrences.  Some cats are more susceptible to this condition and experience repeated outbreaks of acne.

Antiseborrheic shampoos can be used to cleanse and treat the skin in mild cases.  Antibacterial skin cleanser contains ingredients used to break down excess oils in the skin.  Severe cases may require shaving the hair on the chin in order to cleanse and treat the area more thoroughly.  Topical medications can be used in conjunction with oral antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications to eliminate the infection.

Many issues play a role in an outbreak of this nature.  Factors contributing to feline acne often include:

  • Plastic Food Bowls
  • Poor Grooming
  • Dietary Issues
  • Stress
  • Improper Hygiene
  • Suppressed Immune System
  • Skin Conditions
  • Viruses

Feline acne often exhibits symptoms similar to other diseases, therefore an examination by a veterinarian is needed to rule out other conditions and plan a course of action to bring the acne under control.  Pet owners noticing any signs of feline acne should seek medical attention as soon as possible.
