Symptoms of Feline Conjunctivitis

Feline conjunctivitis is an inflammation which causes eye tissues to become red and swollen.  Cats suffering from feline conjunctivitis or feline pink eye share some very common symptoms.  Although, this disease is easily treatable, if left untreated, it can become very serious and eventually lead to a permanent loss of vision.

Some cats will show obvious signs of discomfort, while others will not show any signs of anxiety or distress.

A variety of clinical symptoms that can be related to signs of feline conjunctivitis include:

  • Excessive tears
  • Inflammation of the conjunctiva
  • Inflammation of the cornea
  • Irritation
  • Itchiness
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Possible pus-like discharge
  • Red or pink eyes
  • Squinting
  • Swollen eyes
  • Visible third eyelid
  • Watery eyes

The appearance of the discharge will give an indication as to whether the condition is caused by an allergy or an infection.  If the discharge is transparent, the condition is caused by an allergy.  If the discharge gives the appearance of being green or yellow, the condition is the result of an infection.

Feline eyes are extremely sensitive and eye diseases can progress very rapidly, often leading to irreversible blindness.  Pet owners should seek immediate medical treatment at the first sign of an eye infection.
