Treatment of Canine Diabetes |
In the treatment of canine diabetes, it is extremely important for the pet owner to be pro-active in the management of diet, ketone levels, urine, and weight control. Medications are available for the treatment of canine diabetes. Two highly recommended veterinary drugs used in the maintenance of blood sugar levels in an animal can be found in the form of Glipizide and Vetsulin. Glipizide can be purchased in tablet form and taken orally. Glipizide helps stimulate the dog’s pancreas thus, leading to the production of insulin in the blood. Dosage instructions will be decided upon by the veterinarian, based upon the diagnostic information he has attained. Vetsulin is another veterinary drug used in the treatment of canine diabetes. It controls the glucose level in the blood and helps lessen the clinical symptoms of diabetes. Vetsulin can be purchased from a pharmacy, although it requires a prescription from the attending veterinarian. A dog diagnosed with Type1, or diabetes mellitus will need an insulin injection once or twice daily. The pet owner can make a concentrated effort to improve their dog's health by strictly monitoring exercise, diet, and weight control. With the use of the diagnostic information, the veterinarian can make a decision regarding which insulin will be administered in addition to the proper amount and injection schedule. Dietary alterations, such as changing to a diet especially for diabetic dogs may become part of the treatment. |
