Treatment of Canine Epilepsy

Several extremely effective medicinal options are available for the treatment of canine epilepsy and seizure control.   Once treatment has begun it will need to continue for the life of the pet.

Many options are currently available for the treatment of canine epilepsy.  It is possible to control seizures, even though the disease can not be completely cured.

Seizures are the primary clinical symptom of epilepsy, and can be classified as:

Idiopathic:  The cause of seizures can be metabolic.

Intracranial:  The cause of seizures cannot be identified.

Extra Cranial:  The cause of seizures can be detected and may be due to a tumor or a chemical change in the brain.

One of the most commonly prescribed drugs in the treatment of canine epilepsy is phenobarbital.  Another popular drug used to control seizures; potassium bromide, has not yet been approved by the FDA, but is quickly gaining recognition for use in controlling canine seizures.  Additional medications such as primidone, rivotril, and valium have been used with some success in treating canine epilepsy.

Natural remedies used in the treatment of epilepsy include measures from acupuncture to vitamins.  These methods may be considered for use in conjunction with traditional treatments.

A dog that has been diagnosed with epilepsy should be taken for regular health examinations and blood work to keep seizures under control.
