Treatment of Feline Acne |
Various products are prescribed for the treatment of feline acne and can be found in the form of shampoos, gels, oils, and sprays. Some can be purchased in pet care facilities, while others are prescription medications. Although, feline acne cannot be cured, with proper treatment it can be controlled. One of the most highly recommended drugs prescribed for the treatment of feline acne is prednisolone. Products labeled for use in controlling feline acne contain rich quantities of benzyl peroxide. Benzyl peroxide works to breakdown the excessive accumulation of oil that causes acne to form. Other medications rich in fatty acids can also play a beneficial role in controlling the progression of acne. Topical forms of antibiotics such as mupirocin should only be given as a secondary measure in case there is an outbreak of a bacterial infection. Cats suffering from extreme inflammation due to rashes, redness, or scratches should be treated with a short course of corticosteroids. A cat with acne should have the infected area cleaned regularly to remove the accumulated debris, thus preventing further outbreaks of acne. Alcohol or mild cleansers labeled for cats can be used. It is also advisable to switch food and water dishes to stainless steel, in order to avoid future recurrences of feline acne. |
