Treatment of Feline Arthritis |
Cats are afflicted with the same type of arthritis as that which is found in their human owners. The most commonly diagnosed form of arthritis in cats is feline osteoarthritis. Older felines make up the bulk of cats exhibiting this condition. Various treatment options are available to use when treating a cat with feline arthritis. Treatments can relieve the discomfort and inflammation incurred with this disease. Cats with feline arthritis are often placed on non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS). This type of medication is used to relieve the pain and inflammation or stiffness associated with arthritis, but does nothing to rebuild the cartilage. Glucosamine and Chondroitin can be used as a means of joint support and is safe to use in conjunction with pain relieving medications. A regimen of daily exercise, dietary measures, and weight management should be instituted as part of the course of treatment. A proper diet and loss of extra pounds can go a long way in decreasing the pressure on a cat’s joints and lessening the pain and inflammation. Owners of cats exhibiting signs of arthritis need to consult with a veterinarian pertaining to medications, in order to obtain correct dosage information and safety criteria before giving it to their cat. |
