Treatment of Feline Hyperthyroidism |
Hyperthyroidism is generally a disease, experienced by the older members of the feline population. There are three methods of treatment for cats with hyperthyroidism; including medical therapy, surgery, and radioactive iodine therapy. Warning signs of hypothyroidism can manifest themselves in the form of behavioral changes, kidney disease, liver disease, heart disease, and high blood pressure. Cats suffering from hyperthyroidism will often continue to retain their regular dietary habits, but continued to lose weight. Medical therapy generally requires the administration of medication in pill form. Thyroid levels will be checked and results used to formulate the amount and dosage of medication to be prescribed. Medication will be a lifetime commitment Thyroid levels need to be checked every 6 to 12 months to ensure the cat is getting the proper medication to keep the thyroid under control. Surgery is the second treatment choice and is used to remove an overactive thyroid gland, while leaving the normal tissue intact. Even after surgery, some patients still need to continue receiving a thyroid supplement. Radioactive iodine therapy is a more recent way of treating hyperthyroidism. This treatment choice requires a cat undergoing this procedure be given an IV injection of a radioisotope. The goal in this type of treatment is the assault and destruction of the overactive thyroid tissue, while the normal tissue is left unharmed. |
