Treatment of Canine Scabies |
Treatment of canine scabies begins with a bath and an anti-acaricidal dip. A mixture combining paramite dip, Malathion, or lime-sulfur dip is recommended as a weekly treatment. Dips should be used in conjunction with medicated shampoos. Hair around the lesions can be cut, wounds cleansed, and an antibiotic cream can be applied to infested areas. Alternative treatment methods are available, including Amitraz and ivermectin injections. Some drugs can have side affects; therefore a veterinarian should be consulted for safe usage and dosage instructions before using any dips or medications. A course of antibiotics will be prescribed to clear up occurrences of bacterial infections. Antibiotics will be required in addition to the dips to ensure complete recovery. Treatment will depend upon the severity of the infestation, and can be as short as three to four weeks, or as long as five to eight weeks. Many herbal products can be used in the treatment of scabies. If using herbal products, it may take longer to see positive results, although, there will be less of an opportunity for adverse side effects. The pet owner should take steps to keep the dog’s surroundings as clean as possible. Medication needs to be administered as directed, and the dog needs to be kept as clean as possible to minimize the spread of the disease and shorten the recovery time. |
