Types of Feline Tumors

Tumors are very common in the feline population and can occur due to numerous causes.  In some situations, the pet owner discovers a tumor while handling or combing their cat.  Other times, only after abnormal symptoms occur does the owner discover a problem.  Feline tumors are generally diagnosed in cats four years or older.  Tumor biopsies indicate that more tumors are malignant (cancerous) than benign (non-cancerous).

Feline tumors can develop due to a variety of reasons such as parasitic infestations, viral infections, or hormonal influences.    Numerous tumors can be added to the list of cancer causing agents such as chemical exposure, heredity, and chronic irritation.  Some of the more common tumors include:

  • Adrenal Tumors
  • Alimentary Tumors
  • Bone Tumors
  • Brain Tumors
  • Esophagus Tumors
  • Endocrine Tumors
  • Eyelid Tumors
  • Kidney Tumors
  • Lipomas
  • Liver Tumors
  • Mammary Tumors
  • Mast Cell Tumors
  • Muscle Tumors
  • Nasal Tumors
  • Pituitary Tumors
  • Respiratory Tumors
  • Salivary Tumors
  • Spinal Cord Tumors
  • Skin Tumors
  • Skull Tumors
Several treatment options for feline tumors are available, although due to the variance in tumors, each one needs to be evaluated on an individual basis.  The type and location of a tumor, in addition to the age and health of the patient will help the veterinarian determine the type of treatment to pursue.
