Symptoms of Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease

Feline lower urinary tract disease affects a cat’s urinary bladder.  The urethra can also be affected.  If left untreated it can cause the death of the cat.  Feline lower urinary disease is one of the most common health problems diagnosed in cats.

Many symptoms can be associated with feline lower urinary tract disease, with the inclusion of the following warning signs:

  • Blood in the urine
  • Depression
  • Excessive licking of genitals
  • Lethargy
  • Loss of appetite
  • Pain while urinating
  • Producing small amounts of urine
  • Straining while in the litter box
  • Urinating in unusual places
  • Urinating outside of the litter box
  • Vomiting

As the disease progresses, symptoms will increase in severity.  In severe cases, the urethra becomes completely blocked, rendering the cat unable to urinate.  Once the disease has reached this degree, it is imperative to seek immediate medical care.  If left untreated, the cat will go into convulsions, then lapse into a coma and die.  The longer the condition goes untreated; chances of saving the cat’s life are critically reduced.

With the administration of supportive fluid therapy, kidney function often returns to normal after the obstruction has been removed.
