Canine & Feline Zoonotic Protection Tips |
Vaccination against zoonotic diseases is primarily one of the easiest ways to provide protection, not only for cats and dogs, but also for the human family members. Currently canine and feline vaccines can be administered to protect pets against giardia, leptospirosis, Lyme disease, and rabies. Family pets should be examined by a veterinarian at least twice a year. During the wellness examination, the veterinarian can detect and treat any zoonotic infections, in an effort to avoid the possibility of transmission to the human household members. Some steps that can be taken to protect your pet and yourself against zoonotic diseases include: 1.) Do not allow your pet to come into contact with the feces or urine of other animals. 2.) Remove all items, i.e. food, garbage, or other substances that may attract wild life. 3.) Inspect you pet for ticks after going outdoors. 4.) Purchase and apply appropriate flea and tick control products. 5.) Do not allow your pet to drink any standing water outdoors. 6.) Make sure your pet is fully vaccinated against diseases that can have zoonotic consequences. 7.) Educate your family on the dangers of zoonotic diseases. |
